Fox 13: Tax Deadline Quickly Approaching but You Have Options

MID-SOUTH — The Trump Administration moved the deadline from April to July, as the coronavirus started shutting things down.

And now time is running out to file your taxes.

You have until Wednesday, just two days from now, to get it done.

Certified Personal Accountant Kemeta Hopkins saif the extra time was to give people a chance to file their 2019 returns without penalties.

“You just don’t have everything together,” Hopkins said. “You are missing information.”

If you haven’t filed your taxes, you could miss out on another round of stimulus checks

“If you are within those income limitations and you have not filed for 2018 and 2019, you are missing out on a stimulus check,” Hopkins said. “If you file an extension, it will get you on the queue, and they will start ripping and running.”

Hopkins said if you’re still not ready to file your taxes, you can request an extension to file your return until October 15, that’s the same extended filing deadline from prior years.

“With the extension process, you can file the most basic information: your name, address, social security number, and that’s it,” she said. “That is really all you need, but the key is not to wait until the last minute, because there are possibilities it can kick out due to information not matching. You at least want to give your preparer a little notice.”

However, it’s still not an extension to pay.

“A lot of people think it is an extension for a time to pay, but that’s not actually the case,” she said. Like if you owe taxes, your taxes are still due July 15.”
